What is the Canadian Dental Care Plan?
The Canadian Dental Care Plan (CDCP) is a federal government program designed to help reduce the costs of dental care for Canadians without dental insurance. This plan provides financial assistance for dental care to Canadian residents whose adjusted family income is below $90,000 per year and who do not have dental coverage.
If you or someone you care for is eligible for the CDCP, here is important information to know before scheduling your next appointment.
Pre-Authorization Required for Certain Services
As part of the pre-authorization process, certain treatments must be approved before being covered by the CDCP, such as partial dentures, crowns, and higher levels of sedation.
The coverage decision is solely at the discretion of Sunlife and/or Health Canada. For patients, this may lead to additional wait times beyond our control. Therefore, it is advisable to discuss treatment options with your dentist in advance.
Please note that basic care such as white fillings, root canal treatments, extractions, full dentures, and emergency care are all covered without the need for pre-authorization.
Wait to receive the CDCP welcome kit before scheduling an appointment
There may be a delay of up to three months between the submission of your registration application and the receipt of your CDCP welcome kit. The start date of your coverage, which is listed in your kit, may vary depending on the date your application was submitted and processed. This means that you will not be able to receive care under the program until your coverage begins and you have received your CDCP card. Appointments can only be scheduled from the start date of your coverage.
