What is a root canal treatment?
A root canal treatment removes the infection and decay present inside a damaged tooth. An infection or decay can occur due to an untreated fracture, deep cavity, or trauma. To avoid extracting a compromised tooth, the pulp, bacteria, nerves, and any remaining decay are removed, and the empty space is filled with a biocompatible dental material that allows the tooth to regain its full function.
When a damaged tooth is left untreated, it can lead to intense pain, a dental abscess, or even tooth loss. Extraction is not the only solution! A root canal treatment can save a tooth that would otherwise be doomed to extraction. In addition to being more invasive, extraction can also cause problems with nearby teeth. Root canal treatment is an effective solution with a high success rate.
Why do I need a root canal treatment?
A root canal treatment is needed when the nerve of the tooth becomes irreversibly inflamed. You may experience intense pain, especially when the tooth comes into contact with cold. This pain is spontaneous and may wake you up at night, which are signs that the tooth’s nerve is inflamed and will not be able to recover.
The nerve of the tooth can also become necrotic. Bacteria will then have no difficulty in colonizing the inside of the tooth since your body is no longer able to fight the infection when the nerve is dead. It is only when the bacteria have made their way to the tip of the root that you will start to feel pain. These cases often result in a dental abscess, which can cause swelling and even fever.
Is a root canal treatment painful?
