What are dental implants?

A dental implant is a bone anchor used to replace the root of a natural tooth. Made from biocompatible materials such as titanium, implants have been used for many years by various medical specialties to restore function and aesthetics. Once permanently fixed to the bone and gum tissues, it provides a solid base to support artificial teeth such as crowns, bridges, or dentures.

Dental implants are an ideal solution for replacing lost teeth as they replicate the appearance and function of natural teeth while offering a reliable alternative to traditional bridges or dentures.

They can replace one or more missing teeth or serve as support for partial or full dentures. When a prosthesis is attached to an implant, it remains stable and does not slip. Crowns fixed on implants function like normal teeth and require no additional dental hygiene measures, providing patients with an aesthetic and durable option to restore a natural smile.

Advantages of Dental Implants

Dental implants are one of the available solutions to replace one or more missing teeth.

Versatile

An implant can be used to replace a missing tooth, support a dental bridge, or hold a denture in place if needed, without requiring the implant to be changed.

Durable

Dental implants are the most long-lasting solution over time compared to bridges and dentures.

Aesthetic

The artificial teeth attached to implants can be made with highly aesthetic materials such as porcelain and ceramic.

Simplified Hygiene

Brushing and flossing remain similar, while hygiene around a dental bridge or denture adds additional complexity.

Independence

Unlike a dental bridge, the implant is not dependent on adjacent teeth, whereas the dental bridge could be lost entirely if one of the supporting teeth becomes compromised.

Preserves the Jawbone

The jawbone needs to be stimulated in order to maintain its volume. After a tooth extraction, a dental implant is the only way to stimulate the bone and prevent bone resorption.

How is a dental implant placed?

First, our professionals will examine your mouth and take the necessary X-rays to determine if implants are a good option and whether there is enough bone to support an implant.

A personalized and detailed treatment plan will be presented with all available options to meet your needs.

The steps will be explained to you, and we will answer all your questions.

Our professionals will assess the measurements and X-rays taken during the examination in order to plan the placement of the implant(s). This new digital technology helps reduce chair time by planning and preparing the implant placement on the computer even before the appointment.

When there is not enough bone to support an implant, a bone graft may be considered prior to the implant placement.

When the bone that will receive the implant is ready, our surgeons will proceed with the placement of the implant(s).

The procedure is simple and takes only about 30 minutes per implant, as much of the work has already been done during the digital planning on the computer.

A few months will then be needed for the implant to integrate with the jawbone.

Once the implant has successfully integrated with the jawbone, it’s time to attach an abutment that will shape the gum to the desired form in order to receive the final connection to the crown, bridge, or final prosthesis.

In some cases, this step can be performed at the same time as the implant placement.

A temporary crown may also be placed at this stage to test a prototype of the final restoration before it is fabricated.

Finally, a highly precise digital impression is taken, and the color selection based on your preferences is sent to the laboratory.

A few weeks later, the restoration is delivered to the clinic and is screwed onto the implant.
